  • The Jackboot Land of Lincoln

    This from Pharyngula

Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) interrupted atheist activist Rob Sherman during his testimony Wednesday afternoon before the House State Government Administration Committee in Springfield and told him, “What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous . . . it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists!

“This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God,” Davis said. “Get out of that seat . . . You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon.”

[Lincoln, by all accounts, was actually what was charmingly called a "freethinker", not a christian at all.]

Here is the audio of that little exchange:

Ma’am, word of your exploits has hastened around the world and we are afraid.

What you have said scares us. Many atheists are more full of the milk of loving kindness than those who call themselves Christians but who in reality are selfishly pursuing the redemption of their own personal “souls”. Atheists do good because they love humanity for its own sake. They do not need “god” to tell them what is right. They do not obey some god for fear that otherwise they, with their uncontrollable animal urge to kill and destroy, would embark on a killing rampage. Imagine that! They do not believe in god and yet they do good in the world – good that even you would consider good! Imagine that!

You, I imagine, say you are a Christian, and yet you have made this splenetic, intolerant outburst. Your actions and speaking are not christian at all. They are self-serving and self-righteous and in your religion that is, ma’am, a sin.

The world is safer in the hands of people who do good simply because it is good, who wish for the betterment of humanity because they believe in humanity and not because of their fear of some mythical “superior” power who will supposedly cast them into hell to burn for eternity if they do not.

The prospect of people like you let loose on the world, in your narrow-minded hundreds of millions, is striking fear into the hearts of nations all over the globe who foresee the carnage of your life-hating, “sinful”, and misguided righteousness. (Yes, it is, after all a globe! and the earth revolves around the sun – Galileo was right after all, despite the Church’s damnation of him, and its insistence that the sun revolved around the earth, imagine that!)

Your aggressive attempt to deny a voice to anyone who disagrees with your own wrong opinion is not only an act of hostility against democracy. You follow in the bloody footsteps of Calvin, and of the Inquisition, you goose-step in the jackboots of Stalin and of Hitler and of the Generals in Myanmar, and of the murderous and intransigent Chinese Communist Party, in vituperatively squashing any who dare disagree with your (actually wrong) belief in a god. And that is terrifying to the rest of us in the world, ma’am, because, while you are deluded, your country has most of the guns – and the bombs – and demonstrably loves to use them.

You have, by the way, as we understand, trampled on your own Constitution and its separation of church and state. Shame on you, an elected official sworn to uphold it.

You too can send a nice message like this one to Ms Davis at this address: mdavis2147@aol.com
