Poem for Brendan
The Leader
I wanna be the leader
I wanna be the leader
Can I be the leader?
Can I? I can?
Promise? Promise?
Yippee! I’m the leader
I’m the leaderOK what shall we do?
¹McGough was one of three members of the Liverpool band, The Scaffold (remember “Lily the Pink” [the pink the pink]?), along with Paul McCartney’s brother, Mike McGear, and John Gorman. “He was educated at the University of Hull at a time when the chief librarian was Philip Larkin.” Is there a conspiracy? Everywhere we look, Larkin seems to pop out – usually naked and masturbating – even in Alan Bennett’s The History Boys. You know, Larkin’s the one who wrote: “They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do” etc….He was also supposedly the inspiration for Kingsley Amis’s Lucky Jim.
